Maki over at Dosh Dosh has written an article on making money without a niche. A niche tends to focus on a specific topic area. The conventional wisdom is that the more focused the niche the greater the profitability. The principle is pretty sound in that a focused niche brings you more highly targeted traffic and allows you to focus your income generating efforts.
There are a lot of us out there that our interests a pretty broad ranging and often don’t sustain niche thinking for over the long term. Some don’t necessarily want to create a website or blog on each of those interests, they want to group their interests together on one or even just a few sites. Can sites like that make money? Maki says ‘yes’ but then goes on to say there are no nicheless sites. An interesting premise and worth the read.

Stephen Covey is a motivational writer/speaker. I’ve read several of his books and found his principles sound and down to earth. I’d never made a connection between his book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” and link building. Covey likely never had either since the internet really wasn’t around when he wrote it.
Debra Mastaler in her Link Week column has found the connection. Her seven habits include:
- Create an early warning system.
- Be patient
- Leverage cross-channel marketing
- Make content, not war
- Become a high profile editor
- Extend your reach beyond Digg
- Use all your assets
She tends to steer away from the so called ‘fast’ approaches to a more moderate, steady progress approach. While we’re all in a hurry, often the more steady approach makes for a stronger foundation to build on.
