Are You Googled?

With a headline like that you’d think I was referring to being indexed in the Google search engine. While that is important, what I’m writing about is the ability to customize your Google search page. I first fiddled with doing so several weeks ago and sort of passed it by as a time waster.

While wasting time a few days ago, I fiddled with it again and came to realize that I had passed a time saver by. If you have a Google account you can personalize your Google search page by adding RSS based feeds to it for a wide range of functions including feeds from your favourite sites. You can also add up to six tabs to the page to sort the functions you’re adding. I don’t see a way yet to either delete a tab or rename it which would be helpful. (more…)

Traffic, Traffic, Traffic

Building a blog and entering a steady stream of quality content is just he first two steps in having a successful blog. In offline real estate you often hear the mantra “location, location, location”. Well, online, what decides success or failure after delivering quality content and user experience is the amount of traffic you can generate to your site. The more targetted that traffic can be, the better.

There are no magic bullets for what generates traffic. I’ve had days where traffic starts to show up and I have no idea why except somewhere along the line one of the methods I’ve used has generated some traffic. That traffic might continue on a regular basis or be a one off stream. So, you really do have to explore as many ways as you can to generate traffic. (more…)

What is a Blog and Why Would You Want One?

A blog is a short-cut name for a weblog. It used to be known only as an online journal where angst-ridden teens vent out their daily rants and raves. Voyeurism became the fad. One started to become “someone” through blogging. No talent scout needed, no silver spoon in one’s mouth upon birth required. All you need is a trusty computer, some typing skills, the urge to write just about anything, and voila! You can create your own blog! (more…)

Housekeeping and Other Notes

If you’ve been by this blog before, you’ll notice that there has been some tidying up. Nothing really major other than the masthead has changed. The original sent some mixed messages about what the blog is about. I think this one is a bit more straightforward which is what I usually try to be.

The links have been cleaned up as well, there are more to come especially to resources which I am using to help me get my business up and running. This blog tends to be the testing ground for what I want to do with my other sites as I set them up. (more…)
